lyrics to The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down / Joan Baez

Joan Baez
The Night They Drove Old Dixi Down

Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train,
Till Stoneman_s Cavalry came an_ tore up the tracks again
In the winter of sixty-five, we were hungry, just barely alive.
By May the tenth Richmond had fell; Its a time I remember, oh, so well.
(CHORUS)
The night they drove old Dixi down
And the bells were ringin_;
The night they drove old Dixi down
And all the people were singin_, they went:
La la, la, la, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la.
Back with my wife in Tennessee when one day she called to me,
"Virgil, quick! Come see! There goes Robert E. Lee!"
Now I don_t mind choppin_ wood and I don_t care if the money_s no good,
Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest but they should never have taken the very best.
Like my father before me I will work the land
Just like my brother above me, who took a Rebel stand;
He was just eighteen, my proud and brave, but a Yankee laid him in his grave.
I swear by the mud below my feet You can_t raise a Caine back up when he_s in defeat.

"The difference between the words on the record and the words in the text are either
itentional or otherwise." Joan Baez

Virgil Caine is my name and I drove on the Danville train
'til so much cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive
I took the train to Richmond that fell
It was a time I remember, oh, so well
_The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the bells were ringin'
The night they drove old Dixie down
And all the people were singin'
They went, "Na, na, na, na, na, na, ______ "__
Back with my wife in Tenesse
And one day she said to me,
"Virgil, Quick! Come see!
There goes Robert E. Lee."
Now I don't mind, I'm chopping wood
And I don't care if the money's no good
Just take what you need and leave the rest
But they should never have taken the very best
Like my father before me, I'm a working man
And like my brother before me, I took a rebel stand
Oh, he was just 18, proud and brave
But a yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the blood below my feet
You can't raise a Cane back up when he's in defeat

Provided courtesty of songfacts.com:
-Baez had a much-celebrated romance with Bob Dylan from 1962 until 1965. Dylan was not as well known as Baez when the relationship began and she frequently asked him to perform with her. One of the most iconic photographs of the pair is from their appearance at the March on Washington in 1963. Baez also performed solo for the crowd of 300,000 that day, including her version of "<a href="http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=9390">We Shall Overcome</a>." In 1968, she released the album <b>Any Day Now</b>, featuring 16 of Dylan's songs, and the album went gold in 1969. The subsequent reissue of the album has bonus tracks of Baez performing two of Dylan's biggest hits, "Blowin' in the Wind" and "It Ain't Me Babe," live in concert in Japan in 1967.
